“Like freshly cut roses,
I place life in a vase...
of love.”
―Kamand Kojouri
In making my first vase, I was inspired by Andrea Akerib. She showed how to make a vase by connecting only two pieces of slabs. I loved the simplicity of the design and the shape of the vase; it was different from a traditional cylindrical vase.
One of Akerib's vases is shown on the left, and I used this as my inspiration.
From making this vase, I learned that the majority of the time was spent on refining it. To get the vase as even as possible, I focused a lot of my attention on slowly bellying out the vase from the inside. I also added texture by rolling a Christmas ornament on the clay.
The second vase that I made was inspired by the geometric patterns used by artist, Don Hall. he created a slab box using the slab technique, and used a template to create the shape. He used a folded technique to create his final shape. Since I wanted my vase to be taller, I cut an individual template, and cut 5 pieces to create a pentagonal shape. This proved to be very difficult. I ended up bevelling my seams incorrectly which made it difficult to flawlessly attach my seams. I ended up with a rounded pattern instead of the straight pentagonal design that I anticipated.
