Design Boards

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

Getting to know your client and creating a mood board and design plan, is a must when conceptualising a new design. Here is how my first "professional?" design board came out!

During our Color Theory and Photoshop course at Florence Institute of Design, we were tasked with interviewing a client (another student in class), after which, we would have to design a perfectly tailored apartment, that would suit their needs and personality.

I partnered with my wonderful friend, Lai Yan. During our interview, it was important for me to focus on some key aspects

  1. Functionality of the space - What she would like to use the space for. (She said that she likes her dog and art, and she would like a small space for her dog to sleep and maybe a little spot to sit and paint.)

  2. Likes/Dislikes - Both in design and generally. (Lai loves neutral colour palettes. She loves wooden materials and warm tones)

  3. Hobbies/interests - One's hobbies and interests can relate to the designer their design style. For example, Lai is very adventurous, so I knew that she would appreciate a unique architectural layout.

Our professor challenged us to not ask too many design-centred questions, like, "What specific furniture store do you like?", or "What floor do you like?". While these questions can come in handy, she wanted us to really observe our clients, and make a connection from their personality to a design style.

Here is how my simple design came out for my friend Lai! Many of the furniture pieces were chosen from the Crate & Barrel Catalogue, which lent itself to her overall style.
